HIGH GEAR/SEPTEMBER 1978
"It wasn't hard to come up with a brief message for this rally because I have only one major thing to say for this occasion: Let's stop being on the defensive. Let's quit apologizing for being different from the uptight, woman-hating, child-battering hypocrites who are so intent on denying us our rights. Let's move ahead, being as different from them as we can."
---Susan Saxe, at the Boston Gay Pride March, 1978.
"... being gay is more than just being homosexually oriented. It means acting on it assertively, growing with it, experimenting in relationships (including heterosexual, if independently chosen), and -as far as the militant, radicul and pro-feminist among us are concerned --coming out publicly and challenging the comfortable assumptions of the whole social structure. It means, in these times of referenda and votes on whether we ought to be allowed such self-expression or not, standing up and being
counted."
---John Paul Hudson
WE ARE EVERYWHERE, INTERNATIONAL

NURSES AFFIRM GAY RIGHTS
The American Nurses' Association's House of Delegates, meeting at the association's 51st convention in Honolulu, today adopted a resolution supporting the enactment of civil rights laws at the local, state and federal levels which would provide the same protection to persons regardless of sexual and affectional preference as is currently guaranteed to others on the basis of sex, age, ethnicity and
color.
"Nurses are concerned about the basic human rights of every individual. Wherever nurses practice they want to give quality care to all persons regarIdless of their sexual preferences. Wherever nurses practice they, too, must be assured equal employment and economic opportunities. The laws of our country should guarantee these rights," said Ethelrine Shaw,
WANTED: WOMEN IN MILITARY
---courtesy of Gaysweek
WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Defense Department has asked Congress to end the ban against women in combat roles. A bill already passed by the House of Representatives and now before the Senate should eliminate the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and end all differences of treatment in the military based on
sex, except for certain combat duties. The New York Times reports that the Pentagon wants to accelerate the role of women. in the military because of increasing personnel shortages due to the end of the babyboom. A Defense Department official is quoted as telling the Times there will be a 15% drop of 18 year old males by the mid
BODY POLITIC TRIAL DELAYED
TORONTO, ONT. -The trial of Pink Triangle Press and its three directors, who also are members of the Body Politic Collective, has been delayed. The case against the publishers and Edward Jackson, Gerald Hannon and Kenneth Popert will probably not be heard until the first week of January.
The trial stems from the raid
last December on The Body Politic offices when police removed material from the paper's office following the publication of the article "Men Loving Boys Loving Men." The three collective members were charged with possession of obscene material for the purpose of distribution and with using
person anywhere to be an attack on the human right of all of us. We will move to bring the weight of international protest against any country which oppresses the civil rights of homosexuals," Anthony Sullivan, convenor of the U.S. chapter of WE ARE EVERYWHERE, INTERNATIONAL, said.

RAPE PROSECUTION RELUCTANCE
WASHINGTON, D.C. According to a recent study, prosecutors are reluctant to pursue complaints of rape since the
low conviction rate makes the cases "not good for one's career." The two year study, financed by the Law Enforcemen: Assistance Administration, found that only one
in four complaints results in an arrest, and only one in 60 ends
with a conviction.
The study said that rape was the most underreported crime in the nation. Police receive reports of 56,000 rapes each year, but the actual total is "probably closer to 250,000", the
VA. GAYS WANT LEGAL BARS
RICHMOND -"Homosexuals" are listed with "gamblers, panderers, narcotics users and drunks" as the kind of people which cocktail lounges in Virginia can neither employ nor
serve drinks under Virginia law. The provision is under Sections 4-58.10 and 4-37 of the State Alcoholic Beverages Aci. Virginia Gays are attempting to
have "homosexuals" stricken from the list.
The Virginia Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights Political Action Committee has started a statewide letter-writing campaign to convince the three members of the ABC that the law should be changed. The major contention by the group
